Harry Carlson (b. 1963, America)
Harry Carlson’s signature style consists of thin strands of oil paint generously layered on canvas creating complex textures. Taming his oil paints, Carlson uses hollow needles in various sizes and a syringe instead of paintbrushes to apply diluted and semi-liquid colors. His labor-intensive process is methodological and precise; sometimes he layers more than one hundred strands of paint to achieve the desired outcome. Close-up, Carlson’s work looks like involved weaves of threads, but from afar, a composition that accentuates both depth and light, one where movement emerges. Alike to the arrangement of small but ostensibly haphazard visible brush strokes developed by French Impressionist painters in the 19th century, Carlson’s thin strands of paint bring his works to life. In his car series luxurious abandoned vehicles, rusted by time, set in lush natural environments represent the decline of our modern world. As one of the founding artists of the ‘Art for Art’ movement, working under a pseudonym has provided Carlson with the artistic freedom to explore themes ranging from beauty to the decay of industry, and time, death, and rebirth
Apostles of Business
The idea combining the portraits of these very different people is extremely simple. It’s expressed in the word Apostle. After all, the main role of the Apostle is to bring “good news” to people, meaning hope, faith in something better. Thus, bringing the light of Hope into the world full of suffering and despair is what’s important. Something that drives all of humanity.
